Utilization of Nitrogen Sources by Gibberella Zeae

Pages 568-576 | Accepted 28 Nov 1985, Published online: 12 Sep 2018

ABSTRACT

Amino acids, purines, pyrimidines and related organic and inorganic nitrogen-containing compounds were tested for their ability to serve as the sole nitrogen source for Gibberella zeae (Fusarium roseum ‘Graminearum’) strain ATCC 20273 growing in shake flask cultures. Nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, urea and most amino acids and purines could be utilized as sole sources of nitrogen. Pyrimidines, amides and sulfur-containing amino acids were used poorly, if at all. Many of the carbon-containing compounds utilized as sole nitrogen sources could also serve as the sole source of both carbon and nitrogen.
