Abstract

Knufia cryptophialidica gen. et sp. nov. is a slow-growing, dematiaceous hyphomycete isolated from black galls on the stems and branches of Populus tremuloides and is reported from central Alberta, Canada. Conidia are produced from undifferentiated holoblastic conidiogenous cells on the hyphae as well as from phialides. The affinity of this species to the metacapnodiaceous sooty molds is discussed.
