Measurement of feed intake by grazing cattle and sheep

VIII. Some observations on the accuracy of the chromic oxide technique for the estimation of faeces output of dairy cattle

Pages 339-345 | Received 04 May 1962, Published online: 06 Jan 2012

Abstract

Possible errors in the estimation of total recovery of chromic oxide from representative faeces sampies have been examined.

Six non-lactating cows receiving cut grass at 2 levels were fed chromic oxide capsules twice daily at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., and the marker recovery determined in both representative and grab faeces sampies for 13 consecutive weeks.

In the representative faeces sampies 97.4 per cent of the chromic oxide was recovered, the low recovery being attributed to a loss of chromic oxide when the dry faeces were ground. The recovery of chromic oxide in grab sampies taken at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. was 92.5 per cent for the restricted fed cows and 92.7 per cent for the ad libitum fed group.

It is suggested that a correction factor should be applied when estimating faecal output by chromic oxide.

A modification of the chromic oxide determination is described.
