Diurnal variation in Rumen Volatile fatty acid concentrations and molar proportions in grazing sheep

Abstract

The concentrations and molar proportions of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the rumens of three grazing sheep were measured over a 24-hour period in the autumn. A large change in VFA concentration with time was observed. Smaller but consistent changes in VFA proportions were noted.

The changes were probably related to the grazing pattern of the sheep.
