Pages 271-292 | Received 13 Oct 2003, Accepted 21 Jan 2004, Published online: 17 Mar 2010

Abstract

A revision of Metzgeria in Africa is presented. Eight species of Metzgeria are recognised in Africa: M. consanguinea, M. crassipilis, M. furcata, M. leptoneura, M. madagassa, M. nudifrons, M. quadrifaria, and M. saxbyi. Nineteen new synonyms are proposed. Metzgeria albinea, M. allionii, M. epiphylla, M. corralensis, and M. rufula, all from the Neotropics, are excluded from Africa. The occurrence of M. violacea in Africa is doubtful. A key to all the species in the region is provided.
