Taxonomic notes on the New Zealand flora: new names in Veronica (Plantaginaceae)

Pages 87-88 | Received 23 Sep 2011, Accepted 13 Oct 2011, Published online: 06 Mar 2012

Abstract

Two new combinations are made in Veronica at species rank. The new combinations are Veronica saxicola (de Lange) Heenan for Hebe saxicola de Lange and Veronica maccaskillii (Allan) Heenan for Heliohebe maccaskillii (Allan) D.A.Norton & Molloy.

Introduction

Recent phylogenetic studies of Hebe Comm. ex Juss. and allied genera (Albach & Chase Citation2001; Wagstaff et al. Citation2002; Albach et al. Citation2004) have resulted in the controversial (Brummitt Citation2006; Gardner Citation2007; Garnock-Jones & Albach Citation2007; Garnock-Jones et al. Citation2007; Thorsen Citation2007) recircumscription of Veronica L. to include species and hybrids previously assigned to Chionohebe B.Briggs et Ehrend, Derwentia Raf, Detzneria Schltr ex Diels., Hebe, Hebejeebie Heads, Heliohebe Garn.-Jones, Leonohebe Heads and Parahebe W.R.B.Oliv. (Garnock-Jones et al. Citation2007; Garnock-Jones Citation2008). The Allan Herbarium collection and Ngā Tipu o Aotearoa–New Zealand Plants database (http://nzflora.landcareresearch.co.nz/) follows taxonomic revisions that update the nomenclature and taxonomy used in the Flora of New Zealand series (e.g., Allan Citation1961) and subsequent publications. Therefore, the Allan Herbarium and New Zealand Plants database have adopted the Veronica names as preferred names, with the names previously assigned to Hebe and its allied segregate genera in synonymy. Note that for the Veronica names merely listed as accepted by Garnock-Jones et al. (Citation2007), full details of place of publication and synonymy are provided in Ngā Tipu o Aotearoa–New Zealand Plants. However, there are two recently published names that are without appropriate combinations in Veronica.

First, the recently named and described Hebe saxicola de Lange (de Lange & Rolfe Citation2008) does not have an available name in Veronica. Hebe saxicola was clearly distinguished from H. perbella, H. adamsii and H. macrocarpa var. macrocarpa by de Lange & Rolfe (Citation2008), and it is appropriate to accept it at species rank. Without a name in Veronica, this species could continue to be recognised as a Hebe, which is unsatisfactory for those following the revised circumscription of Veronica. Another option is that H. saxicola is reduced to synonymy in Veronica perbella, the species from which it was segregated, but this too is unacceptable. To remedy this situation a new combination in Veronica is provided below for H. saxicola.

Second, Heliohebe maccaskillii was recognised at species rank (Norton & Molloy Citation2009) after having been variously recognised as a variety or subspecies of Hebe, Heliohebe, Parahebe or Veronica since it was first named and described by Allan (Citation1940) (see synonymy below). Although this taxon has an available name in Veronica at subspecies rank, this is not in accord with its recent recognition at species rank in Heliohebe by Norton and Molloy (Citation2009). Therefore, a new combination at species rank is provided in Veronica.
