Abstract
Vassend, O: Correlates of illness coping in children with asthma. Nordisk Psykologi, 1986, 38 (1), 1–13.
The purpose of the study was to assess relationships between coping problems and selected psychosocial variables in an unselected group of pre-school children with asthma. Factor analyses showed that the independent variables were intercorrelated. Six factors were identified. 1) Somatic/psychosomatic and emotional symptoms in the mother, 2) the child's and the family's general adaptation, 3) the parents' formal knowledge of asthma and allergy, 4) marital problems—mother's evaluation, 5) emotional problems in the father, and 6) marital problems—father's evaluation. The dependent measures were operationally defined as 1) the child's coping in medication situations and 2) during physical examinations, 3) emotional and behavioral changes in the child during illness periods, and 4) the parents' global rating of the child's illness coping. The results showed that factor 2 generally correlated highest with the dependent measures. Further correlational analyses showed that measures of the child's anxiety and fright reactions and behavior problems were strongly associated with measures of illness coping.
