Abstract
Smári, J. (1990). Becks theory of depression: an evaluation. Nordisk Psykologi, 42, 20–36.
In this article a number of studies aimed at testing central aspects of Aron T. Beck's theory of depression are discussed. The hypothesis of negative schemata as a characteristic of depression has some empirical support. On the other hand, it seems that support for the hypothesis on vulnerability factors is missing.
Apparently there is some contradiction: a rather strong support for the effectivity (efficacy) of cognitive therapy, but a limited empirical support for the cognitive model of depression. Alternative and supplementary points of view are discussed.
