This paper presents a brief review of the role of the clinical psychologist in somatic care. Different terms have been used to describe this activity including behavioural medicine and health psychology. Problems when implementing psychological methods are mentioned including the role of patient responsibility and the potential flaws in describing problems in terms of the stress-diathesis model. Further, practical considerations when working in somatic settings are highlighted such as the balance between supervision and clinical work. It is concluded that clinical psychology has a lot to offer in somatic care.
