ABSTRACT
Forty four species of Tanymecus Germar, of the family Curculionidae, out of the forty seven described from India and the adjacent countries are studied. Four new species, namely bhagwani, pseudomarginalis, tectonae and thompsoni and a new subspecies, indicus assamensis, are described. Two new genera, Burmanicus (with chloritis and verlorenii) and Krauseus (with agrestis) are described and a key to distinguish these genera from Tanymecus is given. A replacement name hustachei is proposed for the homonym mixtus Hustache and two varieties are raised to subspecific status. An annotated checklist of the 151 species known from the world is given. The descriptions of 37 species are supplemented with characters of elytral vestiture and genitalia. A key to the species known from India and adjacent countries is provided. The type species of the genus, T. palliatus, is redescribed and the diagnostic characters and terminology used in the identification of species are explained and illustrated.
