A five-year census of fish-eating birds on Lake Kyle, Zimbabwe, revealed that eight species were present in significant numbers with the Reed Cormorant being the most abundant. Dabchicks moved away from the lake to suitable breeding areas during the rainy season. Other species were normally present in greatest numbers in the rainy season. This was determined by fish abundance and there was a correlation between bird biomass and fish abundance. During a drought year more birds remained on the lake in winter, presumably because other water-bodies dried up earlier than usual. There is no evidence that the birds pose a threat to human fishing activities on the lake.
