Abstract

Preus, A. (1972). Stuttering in Down's Syndrome. Scand. J. educ. Res. 75, 89‐104. In several earlier investigations an exceptionally high frequency of stuttering in individuals with Down's syndrome has been found. It has been doubted whether these symptoms represent genuine stuttering, or if it is the question of stuttering‐like behaviour, particularly cluttering.

Continuous speech in 47 cases was evoked, recorded, and analysed with regard to stuttering and cluttering. Thirty‐four percent stuttered on 5 percent of the words when whole‐word repetitions were excluded. Secondary symptoms were observed in 29.8 percent; 31.9 percent had a clear or pronounced tendency to clutter. Statistical analysis showed the occurrence of stuttering and cluttering to be uncor‐related.
