Sex Differences in Global Self‐Esteem. A Research Review

Pages 167-179 | Published online: 07 Jul 2006

Abstract

Abstract: Skaalvik, E.M. 1986. Sex Differences in Global Self‐Esteem. A Research Review. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 30, 167‐179. Two major reviews of studies done before 1975 failed to find systematic sex differences in global self‐esteem. In this paper, the studies included in these reviews have been reanalyzed on methodological grounds. A survey is also conducted of 29 studies reported between 1975 and 1985. The results contradict the conclusions of previous reviews. There was a strong indication that males had higher global self‐esteem than females as measured by context‐free instruments. Furthermore, when sex differences were found using instruments summing various self‐descriptions, there was a clear tendency in favour of males. Sex differences in subscale scores are rarely reported, making it difficult to interpret the differences in global self‐esteem. Potential directions for future research are discussed.
