Plastic or Somatopsychic Surgery

Abstract

The patient's mental attitude is an important element in the decision to repair a physical deformity by plastic surgery, and collaboration between surgeon and psychiatrist is very helpful in evaluation. Many persons who request plastic surgery for minor cosmetic defects have serious personality problems for which psychiatric management will be more effective. The dramatic personality changes following surgical repair of moderate to severe physical deformities are illustrated by four case reports.
