Carbohydrate Digestion and Absorption

Clinically Significant Abnormalities

, M.D.
Pages 149-152 | Published online: 16 May 2016

Abstract

Although starch is our greatest source of carbohydrate, abnormalities of starch digestion are rare. More common are deficiencies of the enzymes that hydrolyze sugars and defects in the transport mechanisms of the products of digestion. The pathophysiology of carbohydrate malabsorption is discussed, together with several tests useful in diagnosis.
