Abstract

The potential reversibility of metabolic encephalopathy secondary to an extracerebral process makes early recognition imperative. An appreciation of the various processes that may underlie the brain disturbance facilitates definitive diagnosis. Examples are acute or chronic pulmonary disease, hypertension, nonketotic hyperglycemia, uremia, and toxic effects of various drugs.
