Evaluation and treatment—why and how

With changing definitions of hypertension, the number of candidates for treatment has expanded greatly and the physician is continually faced with the questions of whether and how to treat the condition. This article reviews the major findings on hypertension research and their implications and discusses evaluation of the patient with elevated blood pressure. “Why should we treat hypertension?” asks Dr Fröhlich. “Because it works—and most dramatically!”
