Fecal incontinence has a severe impact on the elderly patient, as well as the caregiver, and it can be the deciding factor in placing the patient in a nursing home. However, with knowledge of the causes, comprehensive assessment of the patient and his or her situation, and appropriate treatment, the physician can often reverse or minimize the negative effects of this common problem. The authors discuss all these facets and describe normal bowel function.
