Esophageal candidiasis is an opportunistic infection of immunocompromised patients. The frequency of esophageal candidiasis is increasing with an expanding population of susceptible patients, especially those with cancer and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The authors discuss the many factors involved in the epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment of esophageal candidiasis.
