Obese children very often grow up to be obese adults, who carry—in addition to the emotional burden—an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, gallstones, gout, and other disorders. The authors provide tips on surveillance for early signs of obesity, advice on prevention (within the limitations of what is understood about the causes), and a commonsense approach to short- and long-term treatment.
