The pleasures of traveling and camping during the summer are often diminished when the ingestion of contaminated food or water results in diarrhea. Drs Potts and Setness note that most cases of gastrointestinal illness are self-limited and can be controlled by symptomatic therapy alone. If an illness becomes prolonged or debilitating, however, antibiotic therapy may be appropriate.
