Patients who already have lung disease are at special risk for pneumonia because natural defense mechanisms of the airways are reduced. The authors describe three types of pneumonia seen in these patients, methods to identify the causative organisms, and the sensitivity and specificity of these methods. They summarize oral and parenteral antibiotic therapy and point out which pathogens are susceptible to which drugs.
