A typical pathogens are being recognized increasingly often in patients with community-acquired pneumonias. Since isolation of these agents is difficult and serologic confirmation delayed, physicians must arrive at a presumptive clinical diagnosis based on the presence or absence of the extrapulmonary features that characterize the atypical pneumonias. In this article, Dr Cunha offers his approach to diagnosis and treatment of the atypical pneumonias.
