A large intake of over-the-counter antacid preparations containing calcium carbonate may result in milk-alkali syndrome, a serious disorder characterized by hypercalcemia and renal failure. In this article, the authors describe a case of the syndrome in a patient who consumed as many as 50 antacid tablets daily. Important points in diagnosis, treatment, and patient education are presented.
