Over the past two decades, interest in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) research has grown tremendously, mostly because of improved understanding of the physiologic changes that occur during CPR. In this article, Drs Varon and Fromm discuss new and controversial techniques for providing artificial circulation during CPR, including variations in ventilation and compression rates, abdominal compression, and active chest compression-decompression.
