Abstract

What insights does geography bring to understanding a tumultuous planet? In a time when some charge that the discipline is too fragmented to respond to such a challenge, the National Research Council's Committee on Strategic Directions for the Geographical Sciences in the Next Decade proves otherwise. Understanding the Changing Planet does a remarkable job of showing that disciplinary insights are compelling and can address big questions. Whether the volume provokes sufficient surprise is open to question, as is the willingness of the authors to acknowledge core political issues. The result is an extremely useful volume but one that pulls its punches.
