Negotiating Multiple Positionalities in the Interview Setting: Researching Across Gender and Generational Boundaries

Abstract

This article explores the multiple positionalities that were negotiated during qualitative interviews conducted with older British men who are grandfathers, by a young female early career researcher. Gender and other methodological challenges negotiated by researchers of men and masculinities have been critiqued, but negotiations of age and generational differences in the field remain scant, despite recognition that age also structures socially constructed and spatially experienced identities. Including reflections on personal research experiences, the article outlines the need for explicit critical attention by geographers to the influence of the fluid intersectional identities of the researcher and researched on research experiences in the field and research outcomes.

本文探讨一位研究职涯刚起步的年轻女研究员, 在与较为年长的祖父辈英国男性进行质性访谈期间所协商的多重立场。男性、且具有男性气概的研究者所协商的性别及其他方法论挑战已受到批判, 但儘管年龄亦同时被认为结构了透过社会所建构、并在空间上经验的认同, 田野中有关年龄及世代差异的协商之批评却不多见。本文包含个人研究经验的反思, 概述地理学者必须明确、批判性地关注自身与受研究对象流动的多元交织认同, 对田野中的研究经验和研究结果所产生的影响。

En este artículo se exploran las múltiples posicionalidades asumidas durante las entrevistas cualitativas administradas a hombres británicos mayores, que ahora son abuelos, por una joven investigadora que apenas empieza su carrera. Los compromisos asumidos por investigadores de hombres y masculinidades en términos de género y de otros retos metodológicos han sido muy criticados, pero las negociaciones de diferencias generacionales y de edad en el campo siguen escasas, a pesar de que se reconozca que la edad también estructura las identidades socialmente construidas y espacialmente experimentadas. Incluyendo reflexiones sobre las experiencias personales de investigación, el artículo delinea la necesidad de hacer explícita la atención crítica de los geógrafos sobre la influencia que tienen las identidades intersectoriales fluidas de investigador e investigados sobre las experiencias de investigación en el campo y los resultados de la investigación.
