The Computer and Language Remediation

Abstract

The slower learner has always posed special problems for the teacher, and with the decreased standardization of curricula witnessed in recent years, the need for remediation is now even greater. In the absence of funds to hire additional instructors, the computer offers a very viable alternative. The computer can satisfy many of the pedagogical and psychological needs of the remedial student if courseware is properly designed and implemented. In addition to this general problem, the paper discusses features of various CAL programs for second language learning. Particular attention is given to the project presently under way at the University of Western Ontario, Canada.
