Varieties of Computer‐Based Training and the Development of a Hybrid Technique

Abstract

The various uses of computers in occupational training are outlined. Three modes of computer‐based training are discussed further, these are embedded, stand‐alone and adjunct training. An adjunct training system is described in more detail. This attempts to capture the advantages of the task realism of equipment‐based simulations and the flexibility of computer‐based instruction. An informal study showed different patterns of use by experienced and inexperienced trainees, it also demonstrated the shortcomings of ‘rigid’ instructional philosophies.
