Notes
1. Mitchell, Ali Soufan, the Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture, and the Senate Minority Report disagree as to whether torture led to important intelligence findings. Thus, we will have to await the release of classified documents before disinterested parties can examine the data and make an independent assessment. Even so, the claim runs counter to research.
2. John Yoo authored the so-called torture memos to bypass the Geneva Convention, rationalizing the use of torture. These guidelines have been discredited by David Cole (Citation2009), were shown to contradict Supreme Court rulings, and were withdrawn by President Barack Obama in 2009.
