Abstract
Goodwin M. Regions, territories and relationality: exploring the regional dimensions of political practice, Regional Studies. Recent conceptual innovations in the discipline of geography have sought to establish the notion of the ‘relational region’. In opposition to the idea that regions are bounded and discrete, lying within a hierarchy of nested scales, the relational view sees a region as open and discontinuous, forged through a set of spatially stretched articulations and networks. This paper explores what this relational view might contribute to an understanding of the region's role in promoting sustainability, using the South West region of England as a case study. It concludes by arguing that regions are constituted through territoriality as well as relationality.

Goodwin M. Les régions, les territoires et les relations: examiner les aspects régionaux de la pratique politique, Regional Studies. Les dernières innovations conceptuelles dans la filière géographie ont cherché à établir la notion de la ‘région relationnelle’. À l'encontre de l'idée que les régions sont bien délimitées et discrètes, se situant au sein d'une hiérarchie d'échelles imbriquées, le point de vue relationnel considère la région comme ouverte et discontinue, tissée par un ensemble de rapports et de réseaux étendus sur le plan géographique. Employant la région Sud-Ouest de l'Angleterre en tant qu'étude de cas, cet article cherche à examiner dans quelle mesure ce point de vue relationnel pourrait contribuer à une meilleure compréhension du rôle de la région dans la promotion de la durabilité. Pour conclure, on affirme que les régions sont délimitées à partir de la territorialité ainsi que des relations.
Goodwin M. Regionen, Gebiete und Relationalität: Untersuchung der regionalen Dimensionen der politischen Praxis, Regional Studies. Im Rahmen der jüngsten konzeptuellen Innovationen in der Disziplin der Geografie wurde versucht, den Begriff der ‘relationalen Region’ zu etablieren. Im Widerspruch zur Vorstellung von Regionen als abgegrenzten und eigenständigen Gebilden innerhalb einer Hierarchie von verschachtelten Skalen betrachtet die relationale Perspektive Regionen als offen und diskontinuierlich sowie als geprägt durch eine Reihe von räumlich gedehnten Verbindungen und Netzwerken. In diesem Beitrag wird anhand einer Fallstudie der Südwestregion von England untersucht, was diese Beziehungsperspektive zum Verständnis der Rolle einer Region bei der Förderung von Nachhaltigkeit beitragen kann. Zusammenfassend wird argumentiert, dass sich Regionen sowohl durch Territorialität als auch durch Relationalität konstituieren.
Goodwin M. Regiones, territorios y relacionalidad: analizando las dimensiones regionales de la práctica política, Regional Studies. En el marco de las recientes innovaciones conceptuales en la disciplina de geografía se ha intentado establecer la noción de ‘región relacional’. En contraposición a la idea de que las regiones son estructuras limitadas y diferenciadas, situadas en un jerarquía de escalas anidadas, la perspectiva relacional considera que una región es abierta y discontinua, forjada a través de un grupo de articulaciones y redes extendidas espacialmente. Con el ejemplo de la región suroeste de Inglaterra en un estudio de caso, en este artículo analizamos cómo podría contribuir esta perspectiva relacional a comprender el papel de la región a la hora de fomentar la sostenibilidad. Concluimos afirmando que las regiones están constituidas a través de la territorialidad y la relacionalidad.
