Advancing Evolutionary Economic Geography by Engaged Pluralism

Since 2006 economic geographers have been confronted with attempts to constitute a new paradigm of evolutionary economic geography. This paper aims at advancing evolutionary economic geography by reviewing its core critique and proposed solutions, particularly that of integrating the perspective of a geographical political economy. Although the authors sympathize with the identified shortcomings of evolutionary economic geography, the proposed alternative approach, geographical political economy, is regarded as being too narrow and reductionist. By combining evolutionary and relational economic geography in certain respects a plea is made for advancing evolutionary economic geography by engaged pluralism.

Depuis l'an 2006, les géographes économiques ont dû faire face aux tentatives de construire un nouveau paradigme de la géographie économique évolutionniste. Ce présent article cherche à faire avancer la géographie économique évolutionniste à partir d'un examen de sa critique fondamentale et des solutions proposées, en particulier l'intégration de la perspective d'une économie politique géographique. Bien que les auteurs comprennent les lacunes identifiées de la géographie économique évolutionniste, on considère l'approche alternative, à savoir l’économie politique géographique, comme trop étroite et réductrice. À certains égards, alliant la géographie évolutionniste et relationnelle plaide en faveur de l'avancement de la géographie économique évolutionniste au moyen du pluralisme engagé.

Seit 2006 gibt es unter Wirtschaftsgeographen Bemühungen, ein neues Paradigma der evolutionären Wirtschaftsgeographie zu etablieren. Dieser Artikel verfolgt das Ziel, einen Beitrag zu dieser Debatte zu leisten und damit die evolutionäre Wirtschaftsgeographie weiterzuentwickeln. Dazu werden bestehende Kritikpunkte an evolutionären Ansätzen und dafür vorgesehene Lösungsansätze, speziell die Integration verschiedener Perspektiven der politischen Wirtschaftsgeographie, untersucht. Obwohl wir die Erkenntnisse über die Defizite der evolutionären Wirtschaftsgeographie teilen, erachten wir den vorgeschlagenen alternativen Ansatz der politischen Wirtschaftsgeographie als zu begrenzt und reduktionistisch. Mittels der Kombination bestimmter Aspekte der relationalen und der evolutionären Wirtschaftsgeographie schlagen wir die Weiterentwicklung der evolutionären Wirtschaftsgeographie durch einen ‘Engaged Pluralism’ vor.

Desde 2006 los geógrafos económicos han tropezado con las tentativas de establecer un nuevo paradigma de la geografía económica evolutiva. La finalidad de este artículo es debatir sobre la geografía económica evolutiva analizando su crítica central y soluciones propuestas, especialmente en lo que concierne a integrar la perspectiva de una economía política geográfica. Aunque estamos de acuerdo en que existen las deficiencias identificadas de la geografía económica evolutiva, consideramos que el planteamiento alternativo propuesto, la economía política geográfica, es demasiado estrecho y reduccionista. Al combinar ciertos aspectos de la geografía económica evolutiva y relacional, proponemos la necesidad de desarrollar la geografía económica evolutiva mediante un pluralismo participativo.

1. ‘Old institutionalism’ refers to the work of authors such as Polanyi (2001) who described market formation and development as being strongly embedded in a particular political, economic and social context. This term has sometimes been used in contrast to ‘new institutionalism’ that tends to focus on ‘softer’ institutions such as networks, knowledge and trust (MacLeod 2001).
