Abstract
Tranos E. and Mack E. A. Broadband provision and knowledge-intensive firms: a causal relationship?, Regional Studies. Despite the discussions about the importance of the digital economy, we are still far from understanding how information and communication technologies (ICTs) affect economic activity in space. Recent studies have started untangling the spatial economic impact of ICTs, highlighting the potential use of ICTs as a local development tool. This paper contributes to this domain by exploring whether broadband Internet provision can act as an attractor for knowledge-intensive business services in the United States. Using Granger causality tests, this paper addresses the simultaneity issue between broadband Internet demand and supply at the very detailed spatial level of US counties.

Malgré le débat sur l'importance de l’économie numérique, on est toujours loin de comprendre comment les Technologies de l'information et de la communication (les TIC) influent sur l'activité économique dans l'espace. Des études récentes ont commencé à débrouiller l'impact économique spatial des Tic, mettant l'accent sur l'emploi éventuel des Tic comme un outil du développement local. Cet article contribue à ce domaine de recherche en examinant si, oui ou non, l'accès à l'Internet haut débit peut se servir de force d'attraction pour les entreprises à forte intensité de connaissances aux États-Unis. Employant des tests de causalité au sens de Granger, cet article cherche à aborder à un niveau spatial très détaillé la question de la simultanéité entre la demande et l'offre de l'Internet haut débit aux comtés des États-Unis.
Tranos E. und Mack E. A. Breitband-Internetverbindungen und wissensintensive Firmen: eine kausale Beziehung?, Regional Studies. Trotz der Diskussionen über die Bedeutung der digitalen Wirtschaft sind wir nach wie vor weit davon entfernt zu verstehen, wie sich die Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik (IKT) auf die Wirtschaftstätigkeit im Raum auswirkt. In den jüngsten Studien wurde damit begonnen, die räumlichen wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen der IKT klarer zu verdeutlichen und die potenzielle Nutzung der IKT als Instrument zur lokalen Entwicklung hervorzuheben. Als Beitrag zu diesem Thema wird in diesem Artikel die Frage untersucht, ob die Bereitstellung einer Breitband-Internetverbindung in den USA anziehend auf wissensintensive Geschäftsdienste wirken kann. Mithilfe von Granger-Kausalitätstests wird auf den Aspekt der Gleichzeitigkeit hinsichtlich der Nachfrage nach und des Angebots von Breitband-Internetverbindungen auf der äußerst detaillierten räumlichen Stufe der Bezirke in den USA eingegangen.
Tranos E. y Mack E. A. Conexiones a Internet mediante banda ancha y empresas con alto nivel de conocimientos: ¿una relación causal?, Regional Studies. Pese a los debates sobre la importancia de la economía digital, nos queda un largo camino para entender cómo afectan las tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación (TIC) a la actividad económica en el espacio. En recientes estudios se ha comenzado a esclarecer el impacto económico espacial de las TIC, y sobre todo su posible uso como una herramienta de desarrollo de ámbito local. Para contribuir al respecto, en este artículo nos planteamos si la disposición de Internet de banda ancha puede actuar como un factor de atracción para servicios comerciales con alto nivel de conocimientos en los Estados Unidos. Mediante pruebas de la causalidad de Granger, abordamos la cuestión de simultaneidad entre la oferta y la demanda de Internet de banda ancha en el nivel espacial muy detallado de las regiones estadounidenses.

2. For these data information about provision in ZIP code areas with fewer than three providers is suppressed. To address the suppression issue in these data, ZIP code areas with fewer than three providers are conservatively assumed to have one provider in that ZIP code per the precedent set by prior studies (Grubesic and Murray, Citation2002, Citation2004). Previous work has shown this assumption has no impact on econometric studies (Mack and Grubesic, Citation2009).

4. The F1 test for the impact of broadband on KIBS is 1.556 and the test for the reverse direction is 1.351. Both tests are significant at p < 0.01.

The computational intensity of this exercise should be highlighted here, as each of these 5986 regressions (2993 × 2) includes 5986 right-hand-side variables (the lagged version of the y variable – see equation 1), 2993 fixed effects and 2992 interaction terms of the fixed effects with the variable x. The estimation of these models was only possible with the use of a super-computing facility.
