Abstract
Morgan R. Exploring how fishermen respond to the challenges facing the fishing industry: a case study of diversification in the English Channel fishery, Regional Studies. Commercial fishing remains important to employment and wealth creation in peripheral regions, yet fishermen currently face a range of administrative, socio-economic and environmental challenges that affect the viability of their profession. One response to these challenges is to diversify into activities that maintain a link with fishing but which are not subject to restrictions on fishing effort and output. This paper explores diversification among inshore fishermen in the English Channel and proposes a conceptual framework to understand this strategy. The findings indicate that fishermen will typically seek to adapt their fishing behaviour before considering diversification, and some will resist diversification altogether due to economic and sociocultural constraints.

La pêche commerciale reste importante pour ce qui est de l'emploi et de la création de la richesse dans les régions périphériques. Toujours est-il que les pêcheurs font actuellement face à une série de défis administratifs, socioéconomiques et environnementaux qui influent sur la viabilité de leur profession. Une réponse à ces défis consiste à se diversifier dans des activités qui maintiennent un lien avec la pêche mais qui ne sont pas soumises à des restrictions quant à l'effort de pêche ou à la production. Ce présent article examine la diversification des pêcheurs côtiers dans la Manche et propose un cadre conceptuel qui cherche à comprendre cette stratégie. Les résultats indiquent que certains pêcheurs cherchent généralement à adapter leurs pratiques de pêche avant de mettre en considération la diversification, alors que pour d'autres il n'en est pas absolument question à cause des contraintes économiques et socioculturelles.
Morgan R. Wie Fischer auf Herausforderungen für die Fischereiwirtschaft reagieren: eine Fallstudie über die Diversifizierung der Fischerei im Ärmelkanal, Regional Studies. Die gewerbliche Fischerei spielt in Randgebieten weiterhin eine wichtige Rolle für die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und Wohlstand, doch momentan stehen Fischer vor zahlreichen behördlichen, sozioökonomischen und umweltbedingten Problemen, die sich auf die Überlebensfähigkeit ihres Berufs auswirken. Eine Antwort auf diese Herausforderungen liegt in einer Diversifizierung durch Aktivitäten, die zwar weiterhin mit Fischfang verknüpft sind, aber nicht den Einschränkungen hinsichtlich der Arbeit und Produktion in der Fischerei unterliegen. In diesem Beitrag wird die Diversifizierung unter Küstenfischern im Ärmelkanal untersucht und ein konzeptueller Rahmen für das Verständnis dieser Strategie vorgeschlagen. Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, dass Fischer in der Regel versuchen, ihre Fischereitätigkeit anzupassen, bevor sie eine Diversifizierung in Erwägung ziehen, und dass sich einige aufgrund von wirtschaftlichen und soziokulturellen Beschränkungen vollständig einer Diversifizierung widersetzen.
Morgan R. Cómo responden los pescadores a los retos de la industria pesquera: estudio monográfico de la diversificación de la pesca en el Canal de la Mancha, Regional Studies. La pesca comercial sigue siendo importante para la creación de empleo y riqueza en regiones periféricas. Sin embargo, los pescadores actualmente afrontan una serie de problemas administrativos, socioeconómicos y medioambientales que afectan a la viabilidad de su profesión. Una respuesta a estas dificultades sería una diversificación hacia actividades que mantengan un vínculo con la pesca pero que no estén sujetas a restricciones en lo que respecta al trabajo y la producción de la pesca. En este artículo se analiza la diversificación entre los pescadores de bajura en el Canal de la Mancha y se propone un marco conceptual para entender esta estrategia. Los resultados indican que los pescadores normalmente intentan adaptar la actividad pesquera antes de considerar una diversificación, y algunos se resisten a ella completamente debido a limitaciones económicas y socioculturales.
