ABSTRACT

Spatial aspects of education–job matching in Israel. Regional Studies. This paper investigates the role of personal attributes and spatial characteristics in education–job matching in Israel. Logistic regression models are used to predict the impact of various explanatory variables on the probability of attaining an education–job match. Graduates who studied in universities and colleges in the core were more likely to attain a good education–job match, especially in high-technology jobs and in financial and executive occupations, than graduates who studied in higher-education institutions located on the periphery. The structure of the regional economy was found to play a significant role in education–job attainment.

Regional Studies.

Notes

1. In 2011, the expenditure on R&D in Israel amounted to 4.0% of gross domestic product (GDP) and was the highest among member OECD countries (which averaged 2.0%).

2. In 2011, Israel was ranked seventh among OECD member countries in tertiary education degree-holders in the 25–34 cohort (source: OECD, StatExtracts; available at http://stats.oecd.org/).

3. The boundaries of metropolitan areas were determined on the basis of the commuting threshold of 20% of the workers in each community who are working in one of the major metropolitan areas, and spatial continuity of the defined metropolitan area. Localities that are at distances of more than 10 kilometres from the edge of the metropolis were not included.

4. The CBS aggregates individual majors into eight groups: engineering and architecture; natural sciences and agriculture; mathematics, statistics and computer science; medical and paramedical; law; business administration; social sciences; the humanities and arts.

5. Colleges in Israel offer bachelor’s degrees, but the admissions requirements are lower than those of research universities.
