A MASS MORTALITY OF FISH ASSOCIATED WITH LOW SALINITY CONDITIONS IN THE BOT RIVER ESTUARY

Pages 437-447 | Published online: 26 Mar 2010

SUMMARY

The Bot River estuary remains closed for prolonged periods, during which the salinities decline progessively. In October 1981, after four years of isolation from the sea, the maximum salinity in the estuary fell to 3% resulting in a mass fish mortality. The extent of this is compared with the species composition and relative abundance of fish prior to the mortality and with published records of the minimum salinities these species were previously known to tolerate.
