Pages 11-16 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Summary

Of a 100 samples of soils gathered in Southern France from the seashores to the garrigue (zone of xerophytic vegetation on calcareous soil), 7 yielded Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In the primary soil culture the isolates formed cleistothecia but none contained ascospores.

The isolates were pathogenic for guinea-pigs.

The concept of an active telluric saprophytism, suggested by Evolceanu, Alteras & Cojocaru (1962), is accepted by the authors.
