Basidiobolus species pathogenic for man

Abstract

Morphological and cultural studies were made on Basidiobolus cultures isolated from human patients in Uganda and India (Wilson, 1961; Mukerji, 1963) and saprophytic strains isolated from soil, plant detritus, etc. These were compared with the Indonesian strain described by Lie-Kian-Joe, Njo-Injo Tjoei Eng, Pohan, Van Der Meulen & Emmons (1956). All strains are characterised by smooth-walled zygospores and are thus quite distinct from Basidiobolus ranarum Eidam, which has undulate to warty zygospores. The Uganda isolate and the pathogenic and saprophytic isolates from India have similar zygospore measurements 25 to 43 μ in diameter, while the Indonesian strain has slightly larger zygospores (30 to 50 μ) which might be of varietal significance. The other characters such as degree of development of aerial mycelium, conidiophores and conidia, cleavage of conidial and mycelial contents to form endospores, etc., are influenced by cultural conditions and from taxonomic point of view are not valuable. In view of the smooth zygospores all the pathogenic strains can be referred to Basidiobolus haptosporus Drechsl., a species described by Drechsler in 1947.

Résumé

On effectue une étude comparative de la morphologie et de l'aspect cultural de souches de Basidiobolus isolées de malades atteints de Phycomycose cutanée en Ouganda et aux Indes et de souches saprophytes isolées du sol, de détritus végétaux, etc…. Toutes sont caractérisées par des zygospores à parois lisses et sont donc tout à fait distinctes de Basidiobolus ranarum, Eidam, qui a des zygospores ondulées à verruqueuses. La souche de l'Ouganda et les souches pathogènes et saprophytes des Indes ont des zygospores de dimensions semblables: 25 à 43 μ de diamètre, alors que la souche indonésienne a des zygospores légèrement plus grandes (30–50 μ) ce qui peut indiquer une différence variétale. Les autres caractères telsque le degré de développement du mycélium aérien, des conidiophores et conidies, le clivage des contenus des filaments et conidies pour former les endospores, etc., sont influencés par les conditions de culture et ne doivent pas être utilisés d'un point de vue taxinomique. Les zygospores lisses font que toutes les souches pathogènes doivent être rapportées à Basidiobolus haptosporus Drechsl, espèce décrite par Drechsler en 1947.
