Experimental histoplasmosis in embryonated eggs

I. Influence of the route of inoculation and of hydrocortisone on mortality

Pages 18-25 | Published online: 09 Jul 2009

Abstract

The percentage of chick embryos dying from Histoplasma capsulatum infection in embryonated eggs was influenced by the route of inoculation, the number of yeasts in the inoculum, and by the administration of hydrocortisone. Infections of the chorioallantois and of the amniotic sac were the least effective in killing the embryos. Inoculation of 33·7 × 106 yeasts into the yolk sac resulted in 51% mortality. Parenteral and intracerebral routes of inoculation resulted in relatively low mortality rates but reduced hatching rates to 50% and 10%, respectively. Administration of 0·1 mg. of hydrocortisone increased embryo mortality rates markedly, regardless of the route of inoculation.

Summario
