The isolation of Botryodiplodia theobromae from a nail lesion

Abstract

Botryodiplodia theobromae not known to produce onychomycosis was repeatedly recovered from a healthy woman with evident lesions in a toe nail. Mycclial fragments were observed in the scales and the fungus was isolated in cycloheximide-free culture media. The report indicates that many fungi, hitherto considered non-pathogens, may still be able to colonize a variety of human tissues.

Sumario

Botriodiplodia theobromae no considerado anteriormente como agente etiológico de onicomicosis, fue repetidamente aislado de una mujer joven cuya única enfermedad consistía en alteraciones en la uña del pie. Fue posible observar, en las escamas, fragmentos miceliares irregulares e, igualmente, se recuperó el hongo en cultivos repetidos hechos en medios libres de cicloheximida. El informe señala que muchos hongos, hasta ahora considerados no patógenos, poseen, sin embargo, las capacidades necesarias para producir lesiones en los tejidos.
