Secretion of inducible proteinase by pathogenic Candida species

Abstract

The ability of three isolates each of seven pathogenic Candida species to grow in a liquid medium containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a nitrogen source was determined. All three strains of C. albicans, two strains of C. guilliermondii and one strain of C. tropicalis grew well. At any time proteinase activity was detected in the culture filtrates of only the most virulent species—C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis and this observation was related to complete hydrolysis of BSA. Serologically, cross reactions were demonstrated between anti-proteinase antiserum and C. albicans and C. tropicalis culture filtrates. These results further emphasise the role of the inducible proteinase of Candida in the pathogenesis of candidosis.

Résumé

L'auteur étudie, sur 7 espèces de Candida pathogène, en utilisant pour chacune d'elles 3 souches différentes, leur possibilité de pousser dans un milieu liquide contenant, comme source d'azote, de la séralbumine de boeuf (BSA). Les 3 souches de C. albicans, 2 de C. guilliermondii et une de C. tropicalis poussent bien. A tout moment, mais seulement pour les espèces les plus virulentes C. albicans, C. tropicalis et C. parapsilosis, l'activité protéinase est détectée dans les filtrats de culture; cette observation est en rapport avec l'hydrolyse du BSA. Sérologiquement, il existe des réactions croisées entre l'antisérum anti-protéinase et les filtrats de culture de C. albicans et C. tropicalis. Ces résultats mettent en évidence le rôle de la protéinase induite de Candida dans la pathogénèse de la candidose.
