Early stages of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda, Caligidae)

Pages 169-176 | Received 08 Jul 1977, Published online: 21 Dec 2011

Abstract

Adult Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer) were obtained from cultured salmon, Salmo salar L. The morphology of the first and second nauplius is similar to that of other caligid copepods previously described. General behaviour of the early free-living larval stages was also studied. The length of the egg-bearing period is inversely related to temperature. New ovisacs form within a day after hatching. Successful hatching occurs between 5 and 22° G. Duration of each nauplius stage, at various temperatures, and total time from hatching to copepodite were found experimentally. Developmental time and temperature are inversely related.
