Abstract

Russell. R. I. & Goldberg, A. 1970. The Effect of Buffered and Unbuffered Aspirin on Gastric pH Measured by a pH-Sensitive Telemetering Capsule. Scand. J. Gastroent. 5, 675-679.

The effect of buffered and unbuffered preparations of aspirin on the pH of gastric juice has been measured continuously by using a pH-sensitive radiotelemetering capsule. The gastric acidity was reduced after aspirin ingestion, this effect being more marked and of longer duration when buffered preparations were used. In 21 of the 73 tests performed there was a late increase in gastric acidity, occurring 3 — 7 minutes after ingestion of pure aspirin, but later (5 — 25 minutes) after buffered preparations. A constant initial increase in acidity recurred after aspirin in all patients with achlorhydria.
