Abstract

Native valve fungal endocarditis is an uncommon disease with a high mortality rate. We present the clinical features, histological findings and outcome of 2 patients with native valve Aspergillus endocarditis. Both patients had aplastic anaemia as a predisposing disease. The diagnosis was made by Duke's criteria in 1 case and by histology in the other. Surgery was precluded owing to profound thrombocytopenia. Both patients had fatal outcome despite administration of liposomal amphotericin β.
