ABSTRACT

This article is a tribute to Jean Sanville, a distinctive leader in our field whose voice and vision continue to shape the practice of psychoanalysis through the lens of clinical social work. The article highlights Dr. Sanville’s professional contributions while showing her personal impact within a supervisory relationship that becomes a deep and enduring friendship.

Karen K. Redding

Karen K. Redding, PhD, LCSW, is a clinical social worker and psychoanalyst with a private practice in Laguna Beach, California. She completed her psychoanalytic training and received her PhD at the Los Angeles Institute & Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. She is a field supervisor for the USC School of Social Work. As the area chair for the Orange County Chapter of AAPCSW, she teaches, supervises, and facilitates psychoanalytic seminars for mental health professionals. Her publications include contributions to professional journals and the popular press. Dr. Redding has cultivated a decade of experience as a dedicated practitioner of Insight Meditation. She brings an integrated approach as she works to lessen suffering in her practice of psychotherapy and mindfulness-based meditation. Currently, she is in a 2-year Dedicated Practitioner’s Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, and recently completed a Facilitator’s Training Program at InsightLA to expand her role as a teacher and resource with contemplative meditation practices. Her photographic work, Travels Through Humanity, with a social documentary focus on indigenous people throughout the world, has received attention in several art exhibits in Southern California.
