This presidential address is the culmination of a four year presidential track at the Midwest Sociological Society. I am honored to serve such an outstanding professional association in this capacity. The MSS is integral to my professional life and I thank the membership, leadership, and Jennifer Talarico (Executive Director of MSS) for all that they do. Specifically related to this address, I acknowledge Rina Ravisundar (UIUC undergraduate student) who was interested in learning about social science research and asked me to steer her journey. She listened to many ruminations about how to tie sections of this paper together, gave me feedback, and patiently gathered data about paranoids, factoids, and opioids. It was a delight to work with her and I hope she gained from the experience what she wanted.
Finally, I want to thank Kevin Leicht, who lived with this presidential address for well over a year and is probably happier than I that it is finally submitted. We had countless conversations about it and I used his brilliant sociological mind to help me figure out how to say what I thought should be said. For those of you who know him, you will probably see part of him here.
