The First Production of Thomas Heywood's A Woman Killed with Kindness

Pages 199-210 | Published online: 09 Nov 2011

Abstract

This essay is an investigation of the first theatrical production of Heywood's domestic or middle-class tragedy A Woman Killed with Kindness (1603)—a type of play, written in the age of Shakespeare, which is about ordinary, not exceptional, characters, and thus looks forward to the drama of the modern era as well as backward to the morality plays of the fifteenth century.
