Spatial Mapping as a Method for Observing Classroom Art Instruction

Abstract

Spatial Mapping is a category system for directly observing instruction in art classrooms. This paper presents a rationale for studying the spatial dimensions of teaching, explains how to train observers, describes the procedures and techniques involved in a mapping episode, suggests methods for summarizing and analyzing the data, and shows examples of the instruments involved.
