Value Bases Underlying Conceptions of Multicultural Education: An Analysis of Selected Literature in Art Education

Pages 48-60 | Published online: 22 Dec 2015

Abstract

Diverse conceptions of multicultural education are emerging in the field of art education. Review of recent art education literature shows that research and reporting in multiculturalism related specifically to art education has greatly increased. This researcher separates, clarifies, and analyzes multicultural conceptions presented in art education literature based upon similar separations, clarifications, and analyses derived from general education literature (Gibson, 1976; Sleeter & Grant, 1987). Six multicultural education conceptions are presented, analyzed, and discussed in order to clarify positions and facilitate further discussion of multiculturalism in art education.
