INTRODUCTION

Through Lines: Expansion, Allusion, Multiple Voices

(Guest Editor)
Pages 119-121 | Published online: 12 Sep 2014

Notes

1Berman lists a series of twelve “deforming tendencies,” among them clarification, expansion, qualitative impoverishment, and the destruction of rhythms and of underlying networks of signification (244).

2Some of these ideas appeared, in rather different form, in a “Translation Note” written for Necessary Fiction (Gladhart).

3This is an issue highlighted by Emily Apter in Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability.
